A colorimetric and visual assay is described for the herbicide aminotriazole (ATZ). It is based on the etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) by iodine which is formed on oxidation of iodide via H2O2. Longitudinal etching of the AuNRs occurs quickly and is accompanied by a color change from dark blue to red. In the absence of ATZ and the presence of active catalase (CAT), H2O2 is quickly decomposed into water, and the AuNRs will not be etched. In thepresence of ATZ, CAT is partially deactivated, and this affects the amount of available H2O2 and, consequently, of the iodine. Hence, the color is significantly changed. The color changes can be easily detected with bare eyes. The assay has a linear response in the 5 to 70 mu M concentration range, with a detection limit of 1.3 mu M and high selectivity for ATZ. It was applied to the determination of ATZ in water and food samples.

The novel flame retarded unsaturated polyester resins have been developed and prepared by introduction of high nitrogen content additives into the polymer matrix in order to verify their effectiveness in the formation of swollen carbonaceous char inhibiting the burning process of the polymer. The intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) based on mixture or metal complex were developed and characterized by particle size distribution, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis (CHN) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The evaluation of the efficiency of IFRs addition on the flammability and smoke emission of the unsaturated polyester resins (UP) was carried out using the fire hazard (UL-94), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter (CC) tests, as well as smoke density chamber tests. The volatile compounds evolved during the burning of materials were determined using a steady state tube furnace and a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer. Furthermore, the prepared materials were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis and water resistance tests. The mechanical properties of the materials were investigated using Shore D hardness and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). The structural evaluation of the manufactured materials and samples after the cone calorimetry tests was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the incorporation of new intumescent flame retardants led to the formation of carbonaceous char layers’ inhibiting the decomposition process and limiting the smoke emission. The most promising results were obtained for the resin containing complex designated as ZN3AT, for which the highest reduction in maximum values of heat release rate (419 kW/m(2)) compared to unmodified polymer (792 kW/m(2)) were recorded. Apart from that, the prepared intumescent flame retardants affect the cross-linking process as well as the thermal and mechanical properties of the UP.

Eight energetic salts with a gem-dinitro group based on 1,2,4-oxadiazole were developed. All of the structures were confirmed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the pivotal intermediate 3-(chlorodinitromethyl)-5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (3), the potassium salt (4) and the hydrazinium salt (7). All of them are insensitive to impact (>40 J) and have higher energy levels than trinitrotoluene (TNT).

The novel 3-hydroxychromeno[4,3-b]pyrazolo[4,3-e]pyridin-5(1H)-one (13) was efficiently synthesized from the ring conversion of carbonitrile 1 with cyanoacetohydrazide. A mixture of chromeno[2,3-b]naphthyridine 14 and chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine 15 was obtained from base catalyzed transformation of carbonitrile 1 with malononitrile dimer. A diversity of novel annulated chromeno[2,3-b]pyridines 16-22 was also synthesized. Chromeno[2,3-b]pyrrole-2-carboxylate 23 was obtained from the reaction of carbonitrile 1 with ethyl chloroacetate. Structures of the new synthesized products were deduced on the basis of their analytical and spectral data.

In this work, Cladophora glomerata, a harmful seaweed, is converted into an olive-shaped magnetic biochar by a slow pyrolysis process catalyzed by iron. The resultant magnetic biochar has a high surface area of 296.4 m(2) g(-1) with a carbon-rich structure that makes it suitable to be used as an electrode in Li ion batteries. The catalytic pyrolysis process showed significant effect on steam reforming, ketonization and deoxygenation and/or denitrogenation reactions. The overall quality of the pyrolysis products increases: the gas contains a higher percentage of hydrogen (up to 22%), while the oil is enriched in furans (with a selectivity of about 14%). The electrochemistry behavior of magnetic biochar has been also evaluated, using galvanostatic charge discharge, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The electrochemical results indicated a higher initial specific discharge capacity (740 mAh g(-1)) and great cyclic stability for magnetic electrode as compared to the biochar electrode. Despite the richness of data collected on pesticide concentrations in ambient air in France, knowledge on this topic remains partial and heterogeneous in the absence of specific regulations. The population exposure remains thus difficult to estimate; therefore it was necessary to define modalities for implementing national monitoring of pesticides in ambient air in metropolitan France and in the overseas territories. The objective of this work was to identify which active substances (a.s.) have to be monitored in priority. As part of a collective expertise, a group of multidisciplinary experts has developed a method to rank active substances authorised as plant protection products, biocides and antiparasitic agents, which were available on the French market in 2015. A 3-steps approach has been developed. The first step consisted of a theoretical approach based on a hierarchy of substances according to four criteria: (a) national uses, (b) emission potential to the air, (c) persistence in the air, and (d) chronic toxicity. The three first criteria give information on their potential to be present in the atmosphere, and the fourth criterion allows to consider their potential of hazard. The second step was an observational approach based on existing database on pesticide air measurements in France. In the third step, both approaches were combined using decision trees to select priority pesticides. Among the 1316 a.s. first identified from the EU Pesticides database, 90 were selected, among which 43 required metrological and/or analytical development. The experts recommended confirming the relevance of performing a longer term monitoring of these a.s. after a one-year exploratory campaign. The proposed method is reproduceable, transparent, easy to update (e.g. in the light of a change in product authorization), and can be adapted to other agricultural and geographical conditions, and objectives (e.g. monitoring of the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides). This study investigated the nutrient content and reuse potential of wastewater generated during hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgal biomass. The hydrothermal liquefaction reaction was tested at 270, 300, 330, and 345 degrees C to determine the effect of temperature on the formation of non-biodegradable dissolved organic nitrogen (nbDON). Total nitrogen, ammonium, color, and toxicity were selected as key characteristics for the reuse of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater. Results indicated that a higher concentration of nbDON(5) (nbDON defined with a 5 day growth assay) and more diverse heterocyclic N-containing organic compounds were associated with greater toxicity as measured by a growth rate assay. For the tested temperature ranges, the total nitrogen content of the hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater slightly decreased from 5020 +/- 690 mg L-1 to 4160 +/- 120 mg L-1, but the % nbDON(5) fraction increased from 57 +/- 3 %DON to 96 +/- 5 %DON. The temperature of hydrothermal liquefaction reactions can be optimized to maximize carbon conversion and nitrogen recovery. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article is focused on the preparation and characterization of functional nanosilica incorporated dental resins with better mechanical, cytotoxicity, sorption, and solubility properties. Silica nanoparticles were synthesized via Stober method and were functionalized with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. Dental nanocomposites were produced by embedding the functionalized nanosilica into bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate matrix to form B1-B6 series. This was achieved by mechanical mixing of the monomer (50:50 wt%), filler (10-60 wt%), initiator combination (CQ/EDMAB:O. 1 :0.4 wt%) and then followed by LED light curing (wavelength: 450-500 nm, power density:1000 mW cm(-2)) for 60 s. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques were used for characterization of the materials. Cytotoxicity tests were performed to evaluate cell viability and mechanical tests were done to check mechanical strength and stability of the materials. The mean sorption and solubility values of the materials were measured by making a series of experiments on different composite formulations.

A novel pyridinium salt derivative, 2,3,4,5,6-pentaphenyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridinium perchlorate (1) has been designed and synthesized by using pyrylium perchlorate and 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole as ingredients, which can be exploited for the binding and specific sensing of anion via hydrogen bonds. Compound 1 exhibits intense blue emission in solution with maximum emission at 469 nm with a red shift relative to that (426 nm) of solid state. The luminescence intensity of 1 could be selectively and sensitivity quenched with acetate ion and fluorine ion among various anions including F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO- and NO3-. Furthermore, the possible detection mechanism was investigated. This work could contribute a credible potential sensing application of 1,2,4-triazolyl substituted pentaphenylpyridinium salts towards the specific anions in biological and environmental concerns. The reactive co-polymer approach is one of the most promising techniques for the synthesis of functional polyolefins. Following this concept, 1-hexene and p-methylstyrene are co-polymerized in the presence of a generic Brookhart-type catalyst. The microstructures of the co-polymers imply the tendency of p-methylstyrene co-monomers to place at the end of the structural branches formed by the chain walking reaction. The molar masses of the co-polymers decrease, not only at higher levels of co-monomer but surprisingly by decreasing reaction temperature. A mechanism consisting of a highly stable eta(3) metal-benzyl intermediate, which is quantitatively approved by density functional theory calculations, can delicately justify all the aforementioned observations. A series of the produced co-polymers is selectively functionalized by maleic anhydride at the benzylic position of p-methylstyrene, under very mild reaction conditions. Such a reactive intermediate opens the path for the introduction of different types of functionalities in polyolefins. Namely, the grafted co-polymers were further functionalized by a triazole ring, which provides a transient supramolecular network through intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
