Development of flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate with controllable hot spots has spurred increasing interest because of its unique structure and plasmonic properties. Here, charged poly(vinyl alcohol) microgels containing silver nanoparticles are developed by using microfluidic emulsification to produce a smart SERS sensor with charge screening and signals amplification. Importantly, this charged microgel enables the selective concentration of counter-charged molecules and induces the formation of assembled arrays at an immiscible liquid-liquid interface because of the electrostatic interaction. The SERS-active microgels arrays possess controllable structures and facilitate on-site determination of charged pesticides with an enhancement factor of 5.0 x 10(5). Such nanostructures present the ease of assembly, stability, and reproducibility which allow multiplex detection of analytes at aqueous and organic phases without any pretreatment of complex matrix samples. The interfacial sensing platform for on-site SERS analysis of charged pesticides will open vast possibilities for a wide range of in-field applications.

Herein, a novel and sensitive fluorescence method for cartap determination is established on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the fluorescence of glutathione protected Cu NCs (GSH-Cu NCs). In the presence of Au NPs, the fluorescence of GSH-Cu NCs was strongly quenched by the IFE because the absorption spectra of Au NPs overlap well with the emission spectra of GSH-Cu NCs. Upon addition of cartap, cartap could induce the aggregation of Au NPs whose absorption spectrum does not overlap with the emission spectrum of GSH-Cu NCs. Then, with the increase in cartap concentration, the IFE-decreased fluorescence was gradually recovered, realizing the fluorescence sensing of cartap. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method has a good linear relationship with cartap concentration in the range of 7-100 nM, and the detection limit is 3.34 nM. In addition, satisfactory results were obtained for cartap analysis using tap water and cabbage as real samples, which demonstrated that the method as-developed would have great practical application prospects.

A totally new theory of two-step stabilization mechanism for triazole-based zinc-containing complex (abbreviated as (Zn(ttr)(OAc)]) was proposed through several designed experiments. [Zn(ttr)(OAc)] strongly absorbed HCl at the beginning, and then broke down into 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole which could further stabilized PVC. The structure of [Zn(ttr)(OAc)] was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and SEM. Then, Congo red tests and discoloration tests verified [Zn(ttr)(OAc)] could absorb HCl effectively, but PVC showed poor initial whiteness, which further proved above -mentioned stabilization mechanism. Moreover, [Zn(ttr)(OAc)] combined with ZnSt(2) and dibenzoyl methane (DBM) effectively improved the initial color of PVC samples and provided PVC with shorter plasticizing time and longer dynamic thermal stability time than commercial stabilizer 1086F, confirmed by discoloration tests and dynamic thermal stability analysis. We believe [Zn(ttr)(OAc)]/ZnSt(2)/DBM stabilizer system can be used as a commercial stabilizer and the stabilization mechanism of [Zn(ttr)(OAc)] may provide a new way to stabilize PVC. Inorganic nanomaterials have gathered significant attention due to their biological enzyme-like catalytic activities, which are currently being utilized to display excellent biomedical applications. Among these, inorganic nanomaterials exhibiting catalase enzyme-like properties are of particular interest because they can impart protection to mammalian cells from cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and other free radicals. In this study, we have investigated the utility of bovine serum albumin (BSA) coated magnesium nanopartides (BSA-MgNPs) with respect to the protection of mammalian hepatic cells with depleted cellular catalase enzyme. We observed that BSA-MgNPs lead to the rapid breakdown of H2O2 and therefore protect mammalian cells exposed to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT), an irreversible catalase enzyme inhibitor. Results revealed that 3-AT induces oxidative stress by challenging the glutathione (GSH) and catalase enzyme, thus altering the cellular redox balance, which leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human hepatocytes (WRL-68). Results showed that BSA-MgNPs impart protection to the catalase depleted hepatic cells. Expression analysis showed that BSA-MgNPs favorably modulate cellular antioxidant proteins/ enzymes and genes such as catalase, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), peroxiredoxin 6 (Prx6), and Hsp 70 (heat shock protein). These results conclude that BSA-MgNPs impart protection to WRL-68 cells from acatalasia to display better cell survival as well as a remarkable decrease in the intracellular ROS levels.

One of the main directions of steroid research is the preparation of modified derivatives in which, in addition to changes in physicochemical properties, receptor binding is significantly altered, thus a bioactivity different from that of the parent compound predominates. In the frame of this work, 2-arylidene derivatives were first synthesized by regioselective modification of the A-ring of natural sex hormone, 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). After Claisen-Schmidt condensations of DHT with (hetero)aromatic aldehydes in alkaline EtOH, heterocyclizations of the alpha,beta-enones were performed with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, 3-aminopyrazole and 3-amino-5-methylpyrazole in the presence of t-BuOK in DMF to afford 7 ‘-epimeric mixtures of A-ring-fused azolo-dihydropyrimidines, respectively. Depending on the electronic demand of the substituents of the arylidene moiety, spontaneous or 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ)-induced oxidation of the heteroring led to triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines and pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines in good yields, while, using the Jones reagent as a strong oxidant, 17oxidation also occurred. The crystal structures of an arylidene and a triazolopyrimidine product have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and both were found to crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system at P21 space group. Most derivatives were found to diminish the transcriptional activity of androgen receptor (AR) in reporter cell line. The candidate compound (17 beta-hydroxy-2-(4-chloro)benzylidene-5 alpha-androstan-3-one, 2f) showed to suppress androgen-mediated AR transactivation in a dose-dependent manner. We confirmed the cellular interaction of 2f with AR, described the binding in AR-binding cavity by the flexible docking and showed the ability of the compound to suppress the expression of AR-regulated genes in two prostate cancer cell lines.

Primary aromatic amines (PAAs), as a class of persistent and highly toxic organic pollutants, have been posing a great threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, the design and preparation of a highly sensitive and selective luminescent probe to detect PAAs among various amines are important but challenging. In this work, by introducing electron-deficient monomer 4,4 ‘-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzaldehyde (BTDD) with an aggregation-caused quenching behavior into the 2D framework, fluorescent ultrathin covalent triazine framework (F-CTF) nanosheets were constructed. Compared with the aggregated BTDD monomer, the obtained F-CTF-3 nanosheet shows much higher fluorescence quantum yield due to the BTDD fragment being well dispersed in the 2D framework. The F-CTF-3 nanosheet exhibits high stability, high porosity, and high fluorescence performance and has a rich electron-deficient unit in the pore channel, making it an ideal platform for sensing electron-rich PAA molecules. In fact, the F-CTF-3 nanosheet shows high sensitivity and selectivity for PAA detection by fluorescence quenching, among various amines, covering some classic aliphatic amines, heterocyclic amines, secondary aromatic amines and tertiary aromatic amines. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first reported fluorescent sensor for selective sensing of PAAs among various amines. Moreover, F-CTF-3 exhibits unprecedented low detection limits of 11.7 and 1.47 nM toward phenylamine (PA) andp-phenylenediamine (PDA), respectively, surpassing all the reported fluorescent sensors. The combination of experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates that the unique PAA detection performance of F-CTF-3 can be attributed to the static quenching process, which is confirmed by the formation of a ground-state fluorescence-quenched complex on account of the hydrogen bonding interactions between F-CTF-3 and PAAs. This work not only provides a thiadiazole-based 2D fluorescent organic framework nanosheet, but also an excellent fluorescent sensor with unexpected sensitivity and selectivity for PAA detection.

A new ionic liquid is synthesized, and its chemical structure is characterized by FTIR, 1D NMR and 2D NMR, and mass analyses. The thermal behavior and thermal stability of this ionic liquid are investigated. The results approved the formation of 4,4MODIFIER LETTER PRIME-trimethylene-N,NMODIFIER LETTER PRIME-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4MODIFIER LETTER PRIME-trimethylene-N,NMODIFIER LETTER PRIME-dipiperidinium hydrogen sulfate. Moreover, the synthesis of triazolo-pyrimidine derivatives was successfully conducted in the presence of new ionic liquid at room temperature under metal-free conditions, which demonstrated the catalytic efficiency of this ionic liquid. The workup was carried out without the utilization of high-cost column chromatography. After extraction of desired products, the residual ionic liquid could be recycled and reused in the next runs. New ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after fifth run with no significant change in the chemical structure.

Despite the richness of data collected on pesticide concentrations in ambient air in France, knowledge on this topic remains partial and heterogeneous in the absence of specific regulations. The population exposure remains thus difficult to estimate; therefore it was necessary to define modalities for implementing national monitoring of pesticides in ambient air in metropolitan France and in the overseas territories. The objective of this work was to identify which active substances (a.s.) have to be monitored in priority. As part of a collective expertise, a group of multidisciplinary experts has developed a method to rank active substances authorised as plant protection products, biocides and antiparasitic agents, which were available on the French market in 2015. A 3-steps approach has been developed. The first step consisted of a theoretical approach based on a hierarchy of substances according to four criteria: (a) national uses, (b) emission potential to the air, (c) persistence in the air, and (d) chronic toxicity. The three first criteria give information on their potential to be present in the atmosphere, and the fourth criterion allows to consider their potential of hazard. The second step was an observational approach based on existing database on pesticide air measurements in France. In the third step, both approaches were combined using decision trees to select priority pesticides. Among the 1316 a.s. first identified from the EU Pesticides database, 90 were selected, among which 43 required metrological and/or analytical development. The experts recommended confirming the relevance of performing a longer term monitoring of these a.s. after a one-year exploratory campaign. The proposed method is reproduceable, transparent, easy to update (e.g. in the light of a change in product authorization), and can be adapted to other agricultural and geographical conditions, and objectives (e.g. monitoring of the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides). Eight novel chitosan derivatives bearing urea groups are designed and synthesized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, and elemental analysis are performed to confirm the structural characteristics of chitosan derivatives. The antioxidant activities, including superoxide radicals’ scavenging activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals’ scavenging activity, and hydroxyl radical’ scavenging activity, of the derivatives are explored within different concentrations in the reaction system. In vitro fungicidal activity of these compounds is further tested against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, Phomopsis asparagus, F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumebrium Owen, and Botrytis cinerea, respectively, particularly compounds exhibit significant control effect at 1.0 mg mL(-1). The experimental results indicate that the products bearing urea groups show enhanced antifungal property and antioxidant activity compared with pristine chitosan. Meanwhile, their bioactivities follow some regularity on the whole, that is, they are related to the electron-withdrawing property of the different substituted groups of urea. Derivatives with stronger electron-withdrawing property will have higher biological activities. L929 cells are used to carry out cytotoxicity test of chitosan and chitosan derivatives by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The results indicate that some of the samples show low cytotoxicity. This research will be helpful to broaden the application of chitosan in materials.
