In our approach to synthesize bioactive molecules, a series of novel N-heterocycles were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antitumor activity against a panel of three human cancer cell lines, namely, human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa), and human prostate cancer PC-3. The majority of the tested compounds exhibited significant cytotoxic activity toward the tested tumor cell lines. Analogues 33, 34, 31, 38, 21, 23, 22, and 20 exhibited considerable cytotoxic activities comparable with standard drug 5-fuorouracil. Compound 33 displayed superior cytotoxicity with IC50 value of 4.12 +/- 1.21 mu g/mL against HeLa tumor cell line.

A series of new substituted benzimidazoles embedded with a variety of function groups has been synthesized from N-methyl-2-bromoacetylbenzimidazole. The synthesized compounds were fully characterized, and their structures were elucidated based on elemental analysis, spectral data, and alternative synthetic pathways, whenever possible. Some of benzimidazole derivatives were tested as corrosion inhibitors.

In this work, seven small molecular compounds named N,N-diphenyl-4-(2-phenylpyrimido [1,2-b]indazol-4-yl) aniline (1), N,N-diphenyl-4-(5-phenylpyrazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidin-7-yl)aniline (2), N,N-diphenyl-4-(5-phenyl[1,2,4]triazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidin-7-yl)aniline (3), 4,4′-(pyrimido [1,2-b]indazole-2,4-diyl)bis (N,N-diphenylaniline) (4), 4,4′-(pyrazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine-5,7-diyl)bis (N,N-diphenylaniline) (5), 4,4′-([1,2,4]triazolo [1,5-a] pyrimidine-5,7-diyl)bis (N,N-diphenylaniline) (6), N,N-diphenyl-4-(4-phenylpyrimido [1,2-b]indazol-2-yl)aniline (7) with donor-acceptor (D-A) structure were designed and synthesized by employing triphenylamine (TPA) as donor and indazole, pyrazole and/or triazole as acceptor. Systematic study and analysis on thermal, photo physical, electrochemical properties of all compounds were performed. All compounds exhibit good thermal and morphological stabilities with decomposition temperatures (T-d) range from 270 to 462 degrees C, and glass transition temperatures (T-g) range from 78 to 127 degrees C. The investigation of photophysical properties of these compounds revealed that all these compounds are of high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY), particularly for compound 6, whose PLQY value was as high as 90.22%. To explore potential applications of these materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), two devices with compounds 2 and 5 were fabricated. Both devices show excellent device performances with maximum current efficiency, maximum power efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 15.9 cd A(-1), 10.41 m W-1 and 8.4% for compound 2-based device and 10.1 cd A(-1), 5.81 m W-1 and 5.5% for compound 5-based device, respectively.

Ultrathin C3N5 nanosheets with enhanced photocatalytic methylene blue (MB) degradation and H-2-evolution performance were prepared from thermal treatment of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT) and NH4Cl followed with a protonate procedure. The characterization results revealed that the protonating process could contribute to the exfoliation of C3N5 with large surface area, the effective charge transfer capability and the modified band structure. The as-prepared C3N5 nanosheets exhibited enhanced properties in photocatalytic reactions such as MB photodegradation and H-2-evolution from water splitting. This study offered a feasible route to prepare highly-efficient two-dimensional photocatalyst, which could be applied potentially for implementation in wide range of energy generation and environmental applications.

Development of the neurovascular unit (NVU) is a complex, multistage process that requires orchestrated cell signaling mechanisms across several cell types and ultimately results in formation of the blood-brain barrier. Typical high-throughput screening (HTS) assays investigate single biochemical or single cell responses following chemical insult. As the NVU comprises multiple cell types interacting at various stages of development, a methodology combining high-throughput results across pertinent cell-based assays is needed to investigate potential chemical-induced disruption to the development of this complex cell system. To this end, we implemented a novel method for screening putative NVU disruptors across diverse assay platforms to predict chemical perturbation of the developing NVU. HTS assay results measuring chemical-induced perturbations to cellular key events across angiogenic and neurogenic outcomes in vitro were combined to create a cell-based prioritization of NVU hazard. Chemicals were grouped according to similar modes of action to train a logistic regression literature model on a training set of 38 chemicals. This model utilizes the chemical-specific pairwise mutual information score for PubMed MeSH annotations to represent a quantitative measure of previously published results. Taken together, this study presents a methodology to investigate NVU developmental hazard using cell-based HTS assays and literature evidence to prioritize screening of putative NVU disruptors towards a knowledge-driven characterization of neurovascular developmental toxicity. The results from these screening efforts demonstrate that chemicals representing a range of putative vascular disrupting compound (pVDC) scores can also produce effects on neurogenic outcomes and characterizes possible modes of action for disrupting the developing NVU.

Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles decorated on mesoporous carbon nitride (Co3O4/MCN) nanocomposites for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution were investigated in this work. MCN was prepared using 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, high nitrogen content, as a single molecular carbon and nitrogen precursor and SiO2 nanoparticles as the hard template. Complementary characterization techniques were employed to understand the textural and chemical properties of the nanocomposites. The bare MCN showed high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation without using any co-catalyst. The photocatalytic activity of Co3O4/MCN with a Co3O4 mass content of 5 wt % presented two times higher than the bare MCN, which is attributed to the enhanced visible-light harvesting and more efficient charge separation. Mechanistic study shows lower electron-hole recombination rate, higher charge separation efficiency occurs after the formation of p-n type heterojunction. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Herein, a novel and sensitive fluorescence method for cartap determination is established on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the fluorescence of glutathione protected Cu NCs (GSH-Cu NCs). In the presence of Au NPs, the fluorescence of GSH-Cu NCs was strongly quenched by the IFE because the absorption spectra of Au NPs overlap well with the emission spectra of GSH-Cu NCs. Upon addition of cartap, cartap could induce the aggregation of Au NPs whose absorption spectrum does not overlap with the emission spectrum of GSH-Cu NCs. Then, with the increase in cartap concentration, the IFE-decreased fluorescence was gradually recovered, realizing the fluorescence sensing of cartap. Under optimal conditions, the proposed method has a good linear relationship with cartap concentration in the range of 7-100 nM, and the detection limit is 3.34 nM. In addition, satisfactory results were obtained for cartap analysis using tap water and cabbage as real samples, which demonstrated that the method as-developed would have great practical application prospects.

In the present paper, twelve Schiff bases derived from 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole (ATz) and various benzaldehydes, and salicylaldehydes were synthesized. The H-1, C-13, and N-15 NMR data are discussed in relation to the structure of ATz and its imine products. In addition, X-ray, ATR-FTIR, and UV-Vis analytical techniques are used for structure elucidation of ATz-based Schiff bases. It was found that the starting material, 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole, exists as tautomeric mixture of three forms (Graphical Abstract) in solution, whereas in the solid state (C-13 and N-15 CPMAS data) potentially tautomeric proton is located on nitrogen atom traditionally marked as N-2 (Graphical Abstract, 2N-H structure). All investigated Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehydes exist in both phases as tautomeric equilibrium mixtures, where enol-imine forms are dominated structures. The positions of those equilibria only very slightly depend on substituents in phenol ring. Development of flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate with controllable hot spots has spurred increasing interest because of its unique structure and plasmonic properties. Here, charged poly(vinyl alcohol) microgels containing silver nanoparticles are developed by using microfluidic emulsification to produce a smart SERS sensor with charge screening and signals amplification. Importantly, this charged microgel enables the selective concentration of counter-charged molecules and induces the formation of assembled arrays at an immiscible liquid-liquid interface because of the electrostatic interaction. The SERS-active microgels arrays possess controllable structures and facilitate on-site determination of charged pesticides with an enhancement factor of 5.0 x 10(5). Such nanostructures present the ease of assembly, stability, and reproducibility which allow multiplex detection of analytes at aqueous and organic phases without any pretreatment of complex matrix samples. The interfacial sensing platform for on-site SERS analysis of charged pesticides will open vast possibilities for a wide range of in-field applications.
