After stirring at RT for 10 mins 2-bromo-3-oxo-butyric acid benzyl ester (step 1) (1.0 g, 3.69 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 30 mins and then allowed to cool to RT. The mixture was absorbed onto silica and purification by chromatography on silica eluting with 0-10percent DCM/MeOH afforded the title compound as an orange oil ; LC-MS Rt 1.95 mins; MS m/z 288.3 [M+H]+; Method LowpH_v001.
